~IS 24-HOUR SUBWAY SERVICE NECESSARY FOR THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS?: Endless delays, sporadic service and the occasional derailment have become all too familiar for the 5.7 million people who rely on the New York City subway system each weekday. Following the “Summer of Hell,” and with the L-train shutdown looming on the horizon, it’s clear that New York’s overburdened and underfunded subway system needs an overhaul. On Thursday, the Regional Plan Association released a report proposing ways to better life in the tri-state area, including improving New York City’s subway. While the plan has dozens of suggestions that people are embracing, one small detail within the 351-page report has ignited outrage among New Yorkers and the media. RPA suggests that, in order to pay for MTA’s improvements, the transit organization should consider removing overnight service fromMonday to Thursday. “We expected this idea to be provocative, and it’s just one of many that make up a bigger picture plan to fix our failing transportation systems,” Simons told us. “Not everyone will agree with every aspect of the plan, but the status quo is no longer an option and it’s time to try new things.”(via Brooklyn Eagle)

~HIPSTER FOOD CO-OP STAFFERS TRAVEL TO PARIS ON COMPANY DIME: The Park Slope Food Coop is under fire for two administrators taking a weeklong trip to Paris on company dimeJoe Holtz and Ann Herpel, who each make about $90,000 a year running the organic grubhub company, flew to Europe in early November to help set up a similar business abroad. The outrage came when the pair showed a PowerPoint presentation with photos to Park Slope members last week. “You gotta be kidding me,” one member said. “First they waste our money on their vacation, then they waste our Tuesdaynight gloating. It’s more than unseemly.” Herpel defended the move though, saying the company in Paris paid for the flights and housing. (via NYP)

~INDUSTRY CITY GETS MASSIVE LOAN FROM BANK OF CHINA: Sunset Park’s Industry City scored a $196 million loan from the Bank of China that its owners plan to use for more leasing and redevelopment. The loan holds two mortgages, one for $133 million and the other for $63 million. In addition, the owners, Jamestown, Belvedere Capital, Cammeby’s International and Angelo, Gordon & Co., received about $48 million in mezzanine financing with the total funding split between the bank and SL Green. The groups also applied for rezoning in the fall for a $1 billion redevelopment of the office-and-manufacturing complex aimed at making Industry City a more attractive spot for Amazon’s second headquarters. (via The Real Deal)

~BENSONHURST LEADERS WANT GUARDRAILS ON BELT PARKWAY:Bike riders, joggers and pedestrians who enjoy the Shore Parkway Greenway on beautiful days are taking their lives into their hands, according toBensonhurst leaders, who said the close proximity of the nearby Belt Parkway imposes a danger to safety in the event of a terrorist attack. CB11 has issued a request to DOT to install guard rails along the eastbound lanes of the Belt Parkway between Exits 4 and 5, in order to separate the roadway from the popular promenade that meanders along the waterfront of Gravesend Bay. “I was incensed and astonished when I heard of the recent terrorist act on unsuspecting and innocent cyclists in lower Manhattan,” said CouncilmemberVincent Gentile. “While we must continue to live in an open and free society, we must also take basic, yet vitally important steps to safeguard innocent civilians. We must ensure that we are doing all that we can to enhance safety in our public spaces, and the installation of these guardrails will do just that.”(via Brooklyn Eagle)
