~A NEO-CLASSICAL NEWSPAPER-PRINTING PLANT AND OTHER BOERUM HILL EYE CANDY: There’s a monumental building that looks like a Neo-Classical temple and has The New York Times‘ name inscribed on a doorsill — on Third Avenue in Boerum Hill, of all places. On another doorsill of the dignified building at 59-75 Third Ave. there’s a name that was placed there more recently: Math & Science Exploratory School M.S. 447. This public-school building began its existence as a New York Times printing plant. The cornerstone was laid in 1930. The newspapers printed there were sold in Brooklyn and Queens and on Long Island. When we conjure up mental images of old-fashioned Boerum Hill architectural eye candy, the first things that come to mind are of course 19th-century brownstones and rowhouses. Nevertheless, the former printing plant is near the top of our list of fine sights to see in the neighborhood. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~FUNKY BROOKLYN COOK ON ‘TOP CHEF’: Co-owner Christopher Scottof the Windsor Terrace soul restaurant Butterfunk Kitchen landed a spot on Bravo’s “Top Chef,” and he plans to show off his Brooklyn style. Scott already joined 14 other chefs in Colorado to film the segment that will air today. In addition to coming back with some new friends, Scott showed his skills by preparing a Denver omelet and Rocky Mountain Oysters. His lips are sealed about the specifics of the evening premier, but he says he gained a little something from the experience. “I can’t specifically talk about dishes, but all the time as a growing chef, I want to be more humble in the way you go about things in your career,” Scott said. “And the one thing about this experience, it brings more humility into your craft and more respect, those are things that I picked up along the way.” (via Brooklyn Paper)

~COWORKING SPACES COME AND GO WITH THE WIND: The recent closings of the Brooklyn coworking spaces TechShop and 1776NY beg the question: Are coworking businesses on the downfall? As it turns out, coworking spaces come and go with about 25 spaces still open in Brooklyn to date. Green Desk, WeWork, The Yard and Bond Collective all have multiple work spaces in the borough. Croissant cofounder Nisha Garigarn says the closings of coworking spaces show no sign of the end of an era. “From our perspective, there isn’t any unusual activity or large amount of closings,” Garigarn wrote. “We see new spaces opening and old spaces closing several times a month on average, and that’s only the ones we know about.” Garigarn says multiple factors contribute to the uncertainty, and several new spaces have recently opened in BushwickWilliamsburg and Crown Heights(via Technical.ly Brooklyn)

~IT’S HACK WEEK IN NYC, AND BROOKLYN SCHOOLS WON’T BE LEFT OUT OF THE LOOP: Pew pew pew! Students across NYC are designing and coding computer games this week as part of the nationwide Computer Science Education Week. To launch the event, Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariñaannounced a new computer game competition called the CS4All Hack League. Students from 62 middle and high schools will be designing games to tackle topics such as “connected cities” and “news literacy,” in partnership with Games for Change. Brooklyn schools will play a big part in the Hack League, thanks to Borough President Eric Adams’ Code Brooklyn initiative, launched in 2015. Through Code Brooklyn, the borough’s schools have been expanding computer science education by training teachers, building curriculum and infrastructure and getting support from parents. Last month, Adams announced an investment of more than $55 million from Borough Hall to advance STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) education across more than 150 schools in FY 2018. The figure represents more than half of his capital budget and a doubling of his $26 million STEAM-focused educational spending from last year. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~SPIKE’S IN THE HEIGHTS: After his film crew was spotted this month inGowanusSpike Lee has made his way up to Brooklyn Heights to film his newest ’70s-era movie. This week, Lee is filming inside the Brooklyn Historical Society’s 1881 Romanesque Revival headquarters on the corner of Pierrepont and Clinton streets. The movie, “Black Klansman,” is a crime drama based on the true story of Ron Stallworth, an African-American cop in Colorado who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan. John David Washington plays Stallworth alongside Adam DriverTopher Grace and Ryan Eggold, amongst others.(via Brownstoner)

EAGLE SPORTS: The Islanders’ visit to Tampa Bay on Tuesday night was billed as a battle between the two highest-scoring teams in the NHL. Unfortunately for New York, the Lightning struck early and often en route to a dominating 6-2 victory over the Islanders in front of a sellout crowd of 19,092 at Amalie Arena. “We weren’t ready to play,” admitted Isles second-line centerJordan Eberle, whose second-period goal evened the contest at 2-2 before Tampa Bay pulled away for good with a flurry of three consecutive goals later in the stanza. “We woke up in the second and started to play,” Eberle added. “We played really well for 15, 16 minutes and found a way to climb back into it.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)
