GERMANY — Elephant Enjoys Annual Snack: An elephant lifts a Christmas tree at its enclosure at the zoo in Berlin on Tuesday. Every year discarded Christmas trees are offered to the elephants as a snack.

NEPAL — Praying at the River: In this Tuesday photo, a young Nepalese devotee collects water to offer a prayer at the banks of the Hanumante River during the Madhav Narayan festival in Bhaktapur. During the festival, devotees recite holy scriptures dedicated to the Hindu goddess Swasthani and Lord Shiva. Unmarried women pray to find a good husband while those married pray for the longevity of their husbands by observing a month long fast.

INDONESIA — Government Organizes Mass Wedding Ceremony: A bride and groom react to their marriage documents during a mass wedding held in celebration of the New Year in Jakarta on Sunday. Hundreds of couples took part in the mass marriage held by the city government to help the poor who were unable to afford a proper wedding.

INDIA — Celebrating Magh Mela: A Hindu devotee lights an oil lamp and offers prayers after taking ritualistic dips at Sangam, the meeting point of Indian holy rivers the Ganges and the Yamuna, on day Paush Purnima during the annual traditional holiday of Magh Mela in Allahabad on Tuesday. Hundreds of thousands of devout Hindus are expected to take holy dips at the confluence during the 45-day-long holiday.

UKRAINE – Nationalists Rally: Activists various nationalist parties carry torches and flares during a rally in Kiev, Ukraine, Monday. COSTA RICA – Plane Crash: The burnt wreckage of a Nature Airplane is seen in a wooded area in Corozalito de Nandayure, near Punta Islita, Guanacaste province, Costa Rica, Monday. Costa Rican investigators are looking into what caused the charter aircraft to crash Sunday shortly after takeoff, killing several, including families from New York and Florida. 

MISSISSIPPI – Hard Freeze: Icicles hang from the fountain at Beau View condominiums in Biloxi, Miss., on Monday. A hard freeze hit South Mississippi overnight and temperatures are expected to remain near or below freezing for the rest of the week.

CALIFORNIA – Dispensary: A customer purchases marijuana at Harborside marijuana dispensary, Monday, in Oakland, Calif. Starting New Year’s Day, recreational marijuana can be sold legally in California.
