NYU Langone beefs up cardiology staff with new hires

February is American Heart Month in the U.S. and NYU Langone Hosptial, and Brooklyn is gearing up for the month-long celebration by adding to its staff of cardiology experts.

Officials at the hospital located at 150 55th St. announced that four highly skilled heart specialists have joined the staff. Dr. Atul Sharma, Dr. Geoffrey Webber, Dr. Alexander Slotwiner and Dr. Christopher Gade are the newest members of the NYU Langone team of heart surgeons.

“We’re making substantial investments in our team to better serve the Brooklyn community. Our patients now have access to the world-renowned expertise of NYU Langone heart programs,” Dr. George Fernaine, the hospital’s chief of cardiology, said in a statement.

Sharma, who has more than 20 years of experience in the field, has been appointed director of interventional cardiology at NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn. Under Sharma’s leadership, the interventional cardiology team at NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn will offer the latest in cardiac catheterization techniques to detect heart disease and perform coronary interventions, according to hospital officials. Slotwiner and Gade are joining Sharma’s team. All three doctors received training in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular disease at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and are highly experienced in treating coronary artery disease, valvular disease, and peripheral arterial disease, according to NYU Langone officials.

Webber, who is board certified in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine, will serve at NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn as a specialist in consultative cardiology. Webber specializes in non-invasive cardiac testing of patients.

“We are committed to enhancing the care patients with cardiovascular disease receive in Brooklyn and are excited to integrate new technology and advances in research with the care delivered in the community,” stated Dr. Glenn I. Fishman, MD, the William Goldring Professor of Medicine and director of the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology at NYU Langone.

In addition to cardiac care, the cardiovascular services team at NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn also offers nutritional counseling and other support services to patients. Social workers assist with home care arrangements, financial aid, and other matters, hospital officials said. The announcement of the new hires comes as NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn, like other medical facilities around the country, prepares to mark American Heart Month in February. Various activities will take place during the month to promote awareness of the importance of having a healthy heart.

“Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States,” Dr. Bret J. Rudy, executive hospital director of NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn, said in a statement. “Providing this type of advanced patient care in Sunset Park is an important step toward improving cardiovascular health in our community for years to come.”
