THE LEDE: Happy Friday, Brooklyn! Sahadi’s expands to Industry City, local pols rally for better bus service, and the River Cafe is named one of the most romantic restaurants in the country. Plus, an olympic swim coach is accused of sexual misconduct, Bermuda abolishes same-sex marriage a year after legalizing it, and we share the top Middle Eastern restaurants in the city. Finally, droughts in India are making hummus prices go up, America’s life expectancy drops for the second straight year, and roughly $93,370 was spent on condoms for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Have a great weekend.

~BOOMING BROOKLYN SUFFERS BUSTED BUS SYSTEM, WASTING MONEY: Officials and transit advocates on Thursday issued a stinging indictment of the city’s outdated and failing bus service, calling it a system in crisis. And booming Brooklyn has some of the worst bus service in the city, they said, with riders opting out in droves. “They’re decades old. It’s no wonder we have the slowest bus service nationwide,” city Comptroller Scott Stringersaid. Two months ago, Stringer’s office released a report that showed bus ridership dropped nearly 18 percent between 2002 and 2016. “The slowest bus system in America is right here at home,” Stringer said. “Some lines move at 3 or 4 mph, with an average speed of 7.4 mph. In many cases, it’s quicker to walk.” Numerous elected officials joined with advocates working as the Bus Turnaround Coalition to urge the MTA and NYC Department of Transportation to save the system. The coalition studied methods used for improving bus service in other big cities and has come up with some suggested fixes. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~RIVER CAFE DEEMED ONE OF THE MOST ROMANTIC SPOTS IN NATION: Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Brooklyn’s River Cafe was named by OpenTable as one of the top 100 most romantic restaurants across the country. The website created its list by sifting through 12 million reviews on 26,000 restaurants. Not only was the waterfront spot among the winners, it was one of just two businesses in New York, alongside an Upper East Side restaurant. The River Cafe first opened up under the Brooklyn Bridge in 1977 and has since been awarded a Michelin star for its high-quality American cuisine. (via Brooklyn Patch)

~SAHADI’S EXPANDS TO INDUSTRY CITY AFTER 120 YEARS: TheBrooklyn Heights staple Sahadi’s, dating back to 1898, will be expanding for the first time ever to open a new market in Sunset Park’s Industry City. Having arrived on Atlantic Avenue from Manhattan in 1948, Sahadi’s has accumulated widespread popularity and won the James Beard Foundation America’s Classic award, but it has never opened a second outpost. “We’ve had a lot of opportunities to expand over the years, a lot of people have asked us, but this partnership with Industry City seemed like a great fit for us,” said co-owner Christine Sahadi Whelan. The Middle Eastern market will be hopping on Industry City’s eatery boom this fall with a prepared-foods section, a dining area, an events space, a bar and a griddle for making flatbread. (via Grub Street)

~BROOKLYN CRIMINAL COURT SERGEANT ADMITS TO SEX ABUSE IN COURT STAIRWELL: A former Brooklyn Criminal Court sergeant pleaded guilty to public lewdness and was sentenced to one year of conditional discharge on Wednesday after he forced a woman to perform a sex act on him in a court stairwell. Timothy Nolan, 58, resigned from his position on Tuesdayafter previously being suspended without pay. He has since lost his pension for the Oct. 21, 2016 act that also slapped him with coercion and official misconduct charges. Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun sentenced Nolan just after he pleaded guilty at his fifth court appearance. Nolan did not make any comments in court. With 10 years on the job, the disgraced former sergeant approached a mother who was waiting to bail out her boyfriend at the 120 Schermerhorn St. courthouse. He then brought 26-year-old victim Erica McRae into a court stairwell, grabbed her from behind and unzipped his pants. Nolan reportedly made McRae believe he would either hurt or help her boyfriend’s case depending on what she did for him. He then blocked the door with his back and masturbated in front of her, repeatedly telling her to “spit on it.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)
