~HOAN TO LEAVE BROOKLYN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Andrew Hoan, who took the helm as president and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce in December 2016, plans to leave the post in May, BCC announcedon Friday. Hoan departs after a busy year for BCC, in which he orchestrated the group’s centennial gala, produced a strategic plan for the next 100 years and helped lead a spirited bid to attract Amazon’s planned second headquarters. “Andrew Hoan is a friend to me and to our entire borough,” Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams said. “His years of dedication to public service, pursuing economic development to expand opportunity for all, will be felt in Brooklyn for decades to come.” BCC is the largest such group in New York state, with more than 2,100 members and was recognized as the state’s Chamber of the Year in 2017. In a message to members, BCC said Hoan decided to depart because “his family plans to relocate outside the New York City region.” The group said it will launch an immediate search for his replacement and expects no disruption in its activities. (The Bridge via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROOKLYN BBQ GOES VIRAL FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS: Over the weekend, Brooklyn barbecue was trending across social media when Vice asked in a headline, “Why is Brooklyn barbecue taking over the world?” Below the text was a paltry platter of barbecue that filled less than half the plate with two pickles, two tiny buns, a beer and some dry slabs of meat. While the Vice writer explained that the food was spreading to every corner of the world, people from states like Texas, Tennessee and Missouri took the opportunity to make fun of Brooklyn’s barbecue, and they shared their own regional barbecue that’s iconic to the South. A tweet from a person in Memphis displayed a feast of meats lathered in barbecue sauce, while another person wrote, “Ummmm … yeah we do it like this in Kansas City,” above a picture of multiple types of meats and sides bursting off the plate. It turned out that the Vice article was actually a repost from 2014, when it was also mocked. (via WaPo)

~BROOKLYN PROPERTIES OFFER TAX RELIEF: Prices for property around the city are obviously high, so naturally, buyers searching for waterfront retail in Brooklyn are looking for long-term incentives to purchase. After potential buyers of a Williamsburg condo kept asking whether they would receive a tax break for buying, the builders are now offering to pay up to two and a half years of buyers’ property taxes on any unit that goes by the end of the month. “It’s a checklist item,” said David Dweck, principal at Duke Equities. “People say ‘I won’t go into anything without a concession’ because they’re really thinking long-term.” The payments for the 13-unit project at 62-66 N. Third St. range from $23,000 on a one-bedroom to $80,000 for each of the two penthouses. (via Bloomberg)

~‘DAVID BOWIE IS’ ON VIEW AT THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM: The Brooklyn Museum will be the final stop on the world tour of the critically acclaimed exhibition “David Bowie Is.” The exhibition is the first retrospective of the extraordinary five- decade career of David Bowie — one of the most pioneering and influential performers of modern times. “David Bowie Is” explores the creative process of an artist whose sustained reinventions, innovative collaborations and bold characterizations revolutionized the way we see music, inspired people to shape their own identities while also challenging social traditions. “With mainstream appeal and yet an avant-garde heart, David Bowie was one of the most original artists of our times,” said Matthew Yokobosky, Brooklyn Museum director of exhibition design. “He challenged the status quo and continually took us on new musical explorations with his forward-thinking and groundbreaking presentations.” The exhibition explores the broad range of Bowie’s collaborations with artists and designers in the fields of fashion, sound, graphics, theater, art and film. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
