Brooklyn Today: April 30, 2012

Good morning. Today is the 121st day of the year. On this day in 1938, a prototype for the Warner Brothers cartoon character Bugs Bunny first appeared on screen in the theatrical short “Porky’s Hare Hunt.” Animators Chuck Jones and Tex Avery further developed him into the character we now know in such cartoons as “A Wild Hare” (1940), in which Bugs first asks, “What’s up, Doc?" According to Mel Blanc, the character's original voice actor, Bugs has a Flatbush accent.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Kirsten Dunst, actor Perry King, singer Willie Nelson (“You Were Always On My Mind”), basketball coach and Hall of Fame player Isiah Thomas and writer/actor Burt Young.
