Brooklyn Today: June 7, 2012

Brooklyn Daily Eagle

Good morning. Today is the 159th day of the year. Judging by the archives of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, concern about pollution isn’t new. The issue of June 7, 1902, reports on a protest by Greenpoint residents about “vast volumes of black smoke” coming from the nearby powerhouse of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company. Brooklyn Rapid Transit eventually became Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit, which in turn evolved into the BMT division of the city subway system.

Well-known people who were born today include actor Michael Cera, television personality Bear Grylls, singer Tom Jones (“It’s Not Unusual,” “Delilah”), actor Liam Neeson (“Ethan Frome,” “Kinsey,” “Schindler’s List”) and drummer-signer Bill Kreutzman of the Grateful Dead.
