Good morning. Today is the 173rd day of the year. An article that appeared in the June 21, 1901, Brooklyn Daily Eagle is headlined, “The ax may swing in county offices.” This was not a crime story, but rather a report on how the positions of Kings County sheriff, Kings County register and county clerk would soon be put under civil-service regulations.

Well-known people who were born today include cartoonist Berke Breathed (“Bloom County”), former basketball player Tom Chambers, singer-songwriter Nils Lofgren, former baseball pitcher Rick Sutcliffe and Prince William of England.
