Good morning. Today is the 174th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for June 22, 1902, contained an item about a students’ ping pong tournament sponsored by Abraham & Straus. Among the Brooklyn schools that competed were Boys High School, Erasmus Hall High School, Long Island College Hospital (which had a medical school in those days), Polytechnic Institute, Pratt Institute and the Prospect Heights School.

Well-known people who were born today include U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, actress Amy Brenneman, Brooklyn-born actor Michael Lerner (“Eight Men Out,” “Barton Fink”) and actress Meryl Streep (“Doubt,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Sophie’s Choice.”)

The 30th annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade will step off at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. The parade celebrates the beginning of summer and is characterized by participants dressed in hand-made costumes (or the lack of them) as Mermaids, Neptunes or various sea creatures, as well as antique cars, marching bands, drill teams and the odd yacht pulled on a flatbed. This year’s parade features Annabella Sciora as Queen Mermaid and Jackie “the Joke Man” Martling as King Neptune. The parade is followed by the Mermaid Ball at the New York Aquarium starting at 7 p.m.
