Brooklyn Today: July 25, 2012
Good morning. Today is the 207th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for July 25, 1902, tells the story of a widow, the owner of a candy store, who married a 17-year-old boy who lived near Avenue G in Canarsie. The boy’s father, shocked, went to court to get the judge to annul the marriage. Interestingly, the 17-year-old boy was named William Van Houten. However, the famous Van Houten brand of candy was around in Holland as early as 1828, well before this episode.
Well-known people who were born today include model-actress Iman, Hall of Fame basketball player Nate Thurmond, hockey player Evgenie Nabkov and journalist Midge Decter.
