Brooklyn Today: July 26, 2012

Brooklyn Daily Eagle

Good morning. Today is the 208th day of the year. On this day in 1902, the Brooklyn Bridge was reopened to trolley, horse and pedestrian traffic (the automobile was still a rarity) after several rods that were helping to hold up the bridge’s cables snapped. The Eagle said the initial theories that that this was caused by the heat had been disproved, and it was the “dead weight” of people who were on the bridge that was responsible. The immense crowds of people on the Brooklyn Bridge in those days were a factor in the building on the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Susan George (“Straw Dogs”), Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones (“Satisfaction,” “Jumping Jack Flash,” “Start Me Up”), actor Kevin Spacey (“American Beauty,” “The Usual Suspects”) and actress Helen Mirren (“The Queen,” "Gosford Park”).
