Good morning. Today is the 228th day of the year. The front page of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Aug. 15, 1902, informed readers that “Big Tim Sullivan to reorganize Tammany to take in Brooklyn and Queens.” Tammany Hall was the somewhat corrupt Manhattan Democratic machine, and Brooklyn and Queens had just recently been added to the city. What the native Democratic leaders of Brooklyn and Queens thought of this, we cannot say.

Well-known people who were born today include actor Ben Affleck (“Pearl Harbor,” ‘The Town”), U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer, civil rights leader Vernon Jordan, Brooklyn-born actress Debra Messing, and conservative spokeswoman Phyllis Schlafly.
