Good morning. Today is the 235th day of the year. The lead article in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Aug. 22, 1901, was headlined, “New Trolley to Canarsie Planned.” The author hoped the trolleys would replace the “obsolete” steam locomotives and wooden cars that the Long Island Rail Road operated to Canarsie, and pointed out the fact that the track bed was in “perilous condition.” In the early years of the last century, Canarsie was home to the Golden City Amusement Park, which rivaled Coney Island as a destination.

Well-known people who were born today include football coach Bill Parcells, Hall of Fame baseball player Carl Yasztremski, retired Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf and actress Valerie Harper (“Rhoda”).
