Brooklyn Today: October 1, 2012

Good morning. Today is the 275th day of the year. Did you ever wonder how Brooklyn’s famed brownstones were advertised “back in the day?” The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 1, 1885, carried an ad for four new brownstone houses on Union Street at the corner of Seventh Avenue. The description focused on the types of wood each floor was furnished in – mahogany, walnut, oak – as well as the large number of pantries, closets and bathrooms and the spaciousness of the bedrooms. The ornamental trim throughout each house was made of cherry wood.

Well-known people who were born today include singer-actress Julie Andrews (“Mary Poppins”), former baseball player Rod Carew, former President Jimmy Carter, former baseball player Mark McGwire and actor Randy Quaid (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Independence Day”).
