NYC Schools Chancellor Farina mourns passing of Deputy Chancellor Grimm

New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina issued a statement on Wednesday mourning the passing of Deputy Schools Chancellor Kathleen Grimm, a long-time top school official.

Grimm was 68. She recently announced her retirement as head of the Department of Education’s Division of Operations, where she was in charge of the School Construction Authority, which designs, builds and modernizes school buildings. She also oversaw technology, school transportation, safety, food service and other matters.

“The Department of Education has lost a remarkable leader and a champion for all of our students—and I have lost a friend and mentor, whose spirit will continue to guide me personally and professionally,” Chancellor Farina said.

“Deputy Chancellor Kathleen Grimm was one of the most loyal and devoted public servants I have ever met. She understood the meaning of service to our schools and City, and inspired passion and loyalty from all those who worked alongside her. Thanks to her dedication and leadership, our school facilities are now stronger than they’ve ever been.”

Farina said she would “dearly miss Kathleen and the class, grace, and vision with which she served everyone around her and the people of New York. I know that the work she so loved doing will lift our students and schools for years to come.”

Grimm had been in a top position at Tweed since the beginning of the Bloomberg era.
