Civil rights officials say New York City must offer more sports for high school girls in order to comply with federal Title IX provisions.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights says city high schools need to provide at least 3,862 more spots on teams for girls in order to achieve gender equity.

The ruling made public Tuesday comes in response to a 2010 complaint filed by the National Women’s Law Center.

Its co-president, Marcia Greenberger, says girls have been losing out on the chance to play sports.

The New York City Department of Education says in an agreement resolving the complaint that it will survey high school girls to learn the extent of unmet athletic interest.

But the department denies violating Title IX.
