INDIANAPOLIS — Plane Is De-Iced at Airport: A U.S. Airways Express plane is de-iced at the Indianapolis International Airport, early Tuesday. The early morning temperature at the airport was below zero.

GREECE — Reveler Smokes Cigarette on “Clean Monday” During Flour War: A local reveler smokes a cigarette as she celebrate Clean Monday with a flour war, a unique colorful flour fight marking the end of the carnival season in the port town of Galaxidi, some 120 miles west of Athens on Monday. The flour fight, on the coastal road lining Galaxidi’s old harbor, takes place on Clean Monday, the beginning of the 40-day Christian Lent fast that ends on Easter Sunday. Although Clean Monday ceremonies abound across Greece, the most common being kite-flying, Galaxidi’s flour-fight is unique, and is thought to have been influenced by similar goings-on in Sicily in the 19th century.

NEW YORK — Ice Chunks Float Past Brooklyn Bridge Park: People visiting Brooklyn Bridge Park watch chunks of ice float by in the East River on Monday. Temperatures are expected to be 25 to 30 degrees below normal across much of the country, according to the National Weather Service.

ILLINOIS — Starlings, Woodpecker Battle Over Twinkie:  At about 5 degrees outside on Monday, finding some type of Hostess pastry was a big deal for a group of starlings in Alton. One starling decided he was not going to share the loot with a red-bellied woodpecker who landed for a closer look. The starling smacked the woodpecker with his foot, chasing him away, and then went back to the feast.
