ON THIS DAY in 1914, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “200 Pupils on Strike As Boy Is Suspended.”

The article focused on a student strike regarding the right to form a general organization.

“‘Objection to tyranny is obedience to God.’ Shouting this in concert, 200 pupils of the Bryant High School … went on strike today and voiced their objection to the suspension of a popular student of the school and to the refusal of the principal… to permit the establishment of a general organization,” the Eagle reported.

THE PLANET URANUS was discovered on this day in 1781. The German-born English astronomer Sir William Herschel discovered the seventh planet from the sun, Uranus.

POPE FRANCIS was elected on this day in 2013. Argentine cardinal and Archbishop of Buenos Aires Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church by a papal conclave. Francis is the first pope chosen from the Americas.

THE GOLDEN DRAGON Acrobats will perform at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College. The Golden Dragons is an award-winning acrobatics group. Tickets are $25 for adults and $12.50 for children. See brooklyncenter.org.

“FORCE MAJEURE,” an eclectic show featuring a variety of performers, will take place at 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Cobra Club in Bushwick. The performer lineup includes a “mutation” dancer, magician from Taiwan, physical comedian, singers and more. Tickets are $10 at the door.
