Mark-Viverito to pitch municipal ID card to Phoenix

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito is set to travel to Arizona to discuss New York City’s municipal identification card program.

Mark-Viverito will head to Phoenix on April 17.

She was invited by One Phoenix ID, a coalition of business groups and civic organizations aiming to create a municipal ID program in that city. Mark-Viverito, a Democrat, also will meet with members of the Phoenix city government.

She spearheaded the creation of New York’s municipal ID program, the largest in the nation. It launched Jan. 1.

Many of those who have signed up for the card are immigrants living in the country illegally.

Arizona has been home to fierce debate about the fate of immigrants who are living in the country illegally.

Officials in Phoenix have set up a committee to explore the feasibility of an ID card there.
