Every year, New York state Sen. Daniel Squadron holds a community convention where his constituents can air their concerns and help him set his priorities for the coming year.

The annual convention draws hundreds of residents from the Democratic senator’s oddly shaped district — which includes neighborhoods lining Brooklyn’s fast-growing western waterfront (from Greenpoint to Carroll Gardens), plus lower Manhattan and Governor’s Island.

The popular event features speeches from high-profile officials, an awards ceremony and even refreshments served up by restaurants in the 26th District.

This year’s convention, to be held in Manhattan on Sunday, April 12, will not disappoint. U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, one of Washington’s most influential voices, is set to be the event’s keynote speaker.

Schumer — an early mentor to Squadron, who once served as Schumer’s aide — is widely perceived as being next in line as the minority leader when Harry Reid retires at the end of 2016.

After hearing from Schumer and other officials, convention participants will share their ideas and give feedback in 13 moderated discussion groups, with topics ranging from tenants’ rights, parks, ethics reform and social justice. Squadron’s aides take notes of residents’ comments and share them with the senator.

“I don’t take on every issue raised,” Squadron told the Brooklyn Eagle at last year’s convention, but “it’s a big part of setting my priorities.”

The convention will take place on Sunday, April 12, from 2-5 p.m. at the Lower East Side Preparatory High School, 145 Stanton St. (between Norfolk and Suffolk).

Sen. Squadron encourage folks to RSVP by either calling 212-298-5565 or going online to: squadron.nysenate.gov.
