ON THIS DAY in 1918, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Wanted, A Brooklyn Man Who Can Build Concrete Ships.”

The article focused on a senator imploring that someone come forward to help advance the borough’s concrete shipyard.

“The question, ‘How can Brooklyn get one of the concrete shipyards still to be established?’ was answered last night by Sen. William M. Calder in a ‘brass tacks’ statement that left nothing more to be said,” the Eagle reported.
