ON THIS DAY in 1908, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Who Is Virtuous Senator?”

The article focused on a senator (who was not identified) refusing a large offer in exchange for voting against an anti-gambling bill.

“The identity of the senator who refused an offer of $80,000 for a vote against the anti-gambling bill at Albany, as stated by the Rev. James O. Wilson, pastor of the Nostrand Avenue M.E. Church, was not disclosed to-day,” the Eagle reported.

LEWIS AND CLARK set out on their expedition on this day in 1804. Then-President Thomas Jefferson charged Capt. Meriwether Lewis and Lt. William Clark to find a route to the Pacific. The two left St. Louis, Mo., with a 33-member group skilled in botany, zoology, outdoor survival and other skills. They arrived at the Pacific coast in November 1805.
