ON THIS DAY in 1917, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Clever Juggling Enables Emerson to Hold 2 Jobs Safe.”

In the article, the Eagle informed readers about the new health commissioner’s continuing ties to his old position.

“Although Dr. Haven Emerson was appointed as health commissioner on Nov. 3, 1916, he still maintains his eligibility for immediate reinstatement as sanitary superintendent,” the Eagle reported.

“MISTER ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD” premiered on this day in 1967. Fred Rogers hosted this long-running PBS children’s program until 2001. Almost 1,000 episodes were produced over the show’s history. Rogers died in 2003.

MARY CASSATT was born on this day in 1844. Cassatt was a leading American artist of the Impressionist school. She was largely influenced by Degas, and most of her works focused on the theme of mother and child. She died in 1926.
