Edward R. Murrow HS celebrates 40th anniversary

Former students returned in large numbers to Edward R. Murrow High School to take part in a big celebration of the school’s 40th anniversary. The event, which took place at the school at 1600 Avenue L in Midwood in April, was open to all alumni, retired teachers and their guests.

Hundreds came back to Murrow and took a stroll down memory lane. The anniversary celebration included a preview of “The Addams Family,” the school’s spring musical. There was also face painting by the school’s Art Department, planetarium shows, chess games with the chess team and a robotics presentation.

“It was my great pleasure to celebrate 40 years of academic excellence along with over 600 members of the Murrow family,” said Allen Barge, the school’s principal.

Councilmember Mark Treyger (D-Coney Island-Gravesend-Bensonhurst), who is a Murrow graduate, was also on hand for the anniversary party. He presented a City Council citation to Ellen Goldman, who plans to retire in June after 20 years of service as secretary to the principal.

Named for legendary CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow, the school opened in 1974. Its famous former students include U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-Central Brooklyn), Academy Award winning actress Marisa Tomei and the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, according to Wikipedia.

The school has had three principals in its 40 years of its existence; Saul Bruckner, who served from 1974 to 2004; Anthony Lodica who was at the helm from 2004 to 2012,and current Principal Allen Barge.
