Running along Shore Road with the sun shining down on you, the wind at your back, and the warm breeze from New York Harbor greeting you…what could be better?

Four hundred students from Bay Ridge Preparatory School took part in the Tiger Trot, a fundraiser for the private school in which participants run along the Shore Road Promenade.

The Tiger Trot, attracting students from all grades in the K-12 school when it was held on May 1 raised an impressive $117,000, according to school officials. The school is also known as Bay Ridge Prep.

“Each year, I am impressed with the level of generosity and kindness that our families and friends show us,” said Dr. Charles Fasano, co-founder and head of school at Bay Ridge Prep. “This year reminded us more than ever how much students and parents value and believe in our school. We are incredibly thankful to them for allowing us to continue growing and moving forward.”

The younger students ran for a quarter of a mile along the promenade. The older kids went farther, running 1.1 miles, from 79th Street to the 69th Stret Pier and back.

The fun run is an annual event that serves as a major fundraiser for Bay Ridge Prep.  Founded in 1998, the private school has hundreds of students and operates out of two buildings in Bay Ridge. The lower school and middle schools share a building at 8101 Ridge Boulevard. The upper school, which contains high school grades, is housed at 7420 Fourth Ave.

The Tiger Trot was previously known as the Turkey Trot because it used to take place around Thanksgiving.

This year’s fun run also featured a new runner – Ty The Tiger, Bay Ridge Prep’s new mascot!

Ty completed both the quarter-mile mini-trot from students in Grades K-4 as well as the 1.1 mile trot from 79th Street to the 69th Street Pier and back that older students completed.

Race results for all runners can be viewed at the school’s website, www.bayridgeprep.org.

After the Tiger Trot, runners and spectators all enjoyed bagels and applauded the lead runners in each category as they were presented with trophies by Ty The Tiger.

The friendly feline will also be on hand for several celebrations honoring classes who contributed to helping the school reach its $117,000 total.

For having 100 percent participation and the highest fundraising total in the Lower and Middle School, Grade 6 will receive a Pajama Day as well as a choice of a pizza, pasta or ice cream party hosted by Ty.

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 also earned a pajama day for having 100% participation.

For the highest fundraising total in the Upper School, Grade 10 will receive a pasta party hosted by Ty.
