Bishop Kearney HS dinner celebrates student athletes

Student athletes were the stars of the night at Bishop Kearney High School’s Annual Sports Awards Dinner, as parents, coaches and members of the school’s administration came together to congratulate all those who took part in the sports activities this year.

Awards were handed out to several Bishop Kearney students, including many girls from Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst and Marine Park. The dinner took place earlier this month at the Rex Manor, a catering hall in Dyker Heights.

Located at 2202 60th St. in Bensonhurst, Bishop Kearney High School is a private Catholic secondary school for girls. The school is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph.

At the dinner, each Bishop Kearney sports team coach presented the Most Valuable Player Award to a member of the team who had made an important contribution to their sport during the year.

The winners included: Marie Holstrom (junior varsity (JV) basketball);  Kailey O’Grady (varsity basketball);  DinaGrace Gipli (boosters);  Paulina Pazcowski (JV cheerleaders);  Stephanie Anderson (varsity cheerleaders); Brianna Floreal (tennis); Lisa Fajardo (cross country, indoor and outdoor track); Jenny Fahy (soccer); Nicole Pazarecki (JV softball); Jennifer Bove (varsity softball); Tarah Drennan (swimming); Gabriella Rafaniello (JV volleyball); and  Nicole Pazarecki (varsity volleyball).

Special awards named in honor of people who made a significant contribution over the years were presented to outstanding athletes.

The Sister Geraldine Woods Award was given to Jacqueline Gallagher. The Erin Quinlan Memorial Award was presented to Gabrielle Monferrato.  Samantha Southard received the Theresa Whitty Award and Therese Gallagher was presented with the Deborah Lovett Award.

At Bishop Kearney High School, sports are considered a valuable part of the educational experience, according to school officials.

“Athleticism is a gift, and we nurture that gift at Kearney,” Dr. Margaret Minson, the school’s president, wrote in a statement on the school’s official website. “Participation in sports teaches our young women to be team players who aren’t afraid to take a chance.”

Bishop Kearney High School had an outstanding year in sports, school officials said.

The cross country track team won the Brooklyn/Queens Championship in the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA).  Lisa Fajardo won the CHSAA Cross Country Championship and was named Brooklyn/Queens champion. She was also the Mayor’s Cup champion.

Tessy Gallagher, Jackie Gallagher, Lisa Fajardo and Colleen Gallagher were selected to the CHSAA All-Star track team and qualified to compete in the New York State Federation Championship.  During the indoor track season, Fajardo was the Brooklyn/Queens champion and the city champion at 1,500 meters.  Jackie Gallagher won the Brooklyn/Queens Championship in the 1,000 meter race and Tessy Gallagher was the Brooklyn/Queens champion at 3,000 meters.

In outdoor track, Fajardo won Brooklyn/Queens Championship and the City Championship at 1,500 meters. She also qualified to compete in the state championship and set a new school record.

Bishop Kearney’s swim team tied for first place in the Girls Catholic High Schools Athletic Association (GCHSAA) B Division during Dual Meet Season and took first place in the 200 and 500 freestyle races at the B Division Championship Swim Meet.

The JV volleyball team finished first in GCHSAA regular season play.

Jen Kaye was named to the 2015 Mayor’s Cup Basketball Team. Kailey O’Grady and Jen Kaye made The Tablet All-Star- Basketball Team and Emily Bosiacki was named to The Tablet All-Star Basketball 2nd Team.

The Tablet is the newspaper of the Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn.

Each year, the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) recognizes Bishop Kearney students who earn an average of 95 percent or more, while participating in sports.  This year, Valentina Acevado, JessicaMina Diaz, Lisa Fajardo, Colleen Gallagher, Jacqueline Gallagher, Therese Gallagher, Brianna Gelsomini, Marie Holstrom, Nicole Pazarecki, Bridget Pynn, Jessica Southard and Joanna Sullivan were honored by the NCAA.
