The Brooklyn Rugby men and women competed in the Tri-State Sevens Tournament in Danbury, Connecticut this past weekend, the second leg of the 2015 Empire GU Sevens Series, both finishing in third place. The Brooklyn men maintain the top spot in the series, while the women moved up to fourth place with three tournaments left to play.

On the men’s side, Brooklyn continued their dominance over Village Lions with a 34-0 win to kick off the day, improving upon their 28-12 win over the Lions in the opening match of the Monmouth Sevens one week prior. Brooklyn then went on to beat the Fairfield Yankees 26-19, Danbury 21-0, and Montclair 19-0, to finish unbeaten in pool play for the second consecutive week.

Brooklyn faced off against New York Rugby Club in the Cup Semifinals, a team they had already beaten in the Monmouth Sevens tournament. However, New York proved too much for Brooklyn in this match, prevailing 28-14 and eventually winning the Cup Championship. The loss ended Brooklyn’s streak of 9 consecutive wins to open the season. In the third place match, Brooklyn defeated Monmouth 19-12, in a rematch of last week’s Cup Championship.

On the women’s side, Brooklyn was looking to improve upon their showing at Monmouth Sevens, but faced a tough pool that included two of the region’s top teams – Old Blue and New York. Brooklyn opened the day with a loss to New York, but followed that up with a strong win against the host, Danbury, finishing second in their pool. In the Cup Quarterfinals, Brooklyn defeated New York ‘B’ and moved into the semis to face Old Blue, considered by many to be the favorite, who would defeat Brooklyn and go on to win the Cup Championship. In the consolation match, Brooklyn defeated Village Lions to secure third place on the day and move up into fourth in the overall series standings.

The Brooklyn men and women will continue their season on Saturday, July 11 at the Hell Gate Sevens Tournament on Randall’s Island.
