ON THIS DAY IN 1948, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “52 Jet Planes Readied for Flight to Idlewild.”

The article focused on the opening of Idlewild International Airport, now known as John F. Kennedy International Airport.

“Fifty-two jet fighter planes were to take off from Dow Field (in Bangor, Maine) Thursday to fly to New York to take part in a 1,000-plane air show celebrating the opening of Idlewild International Airport Saturday,” the Eagle reported.

LEO DUROCHER was born on this day in 1905. He began his major league baseball career with the New York Yankees in 1925. He also played for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Brooklyn Dodgers. “Nice guys finish last” would become his trademark, after using the phrase for the first time in 1946. As a manager, he guided the New York Giants into two World Series. He died in October 1991.
