The 2015 Empire GU 7s Rugby Series is in the books and the Brooklyn Rugby Men are the season champions. Brooklyn capped off an incredible season at the Blazing 7s Tournament on Saturday, finishing in second place and securing the Empire GU 7s season series championship in the process. The Brooklyn women also finished in second place on Saturday, securing a fourth place finish overall in the Empire 7s Series for the season.

The men began their day with a forfeit from Buffalo Rugby Club (NY). In their second match they faced off against New York Athletic Club ‘B’ (NYC), securing a 21-19 win on the final play of the game. Brooklyn’s final pool play match came against defending series champion, Princeton Athletic Club (NJ). In one of Brooklyn’s best offensive performances of the year, the team was able to notch five tries against one of the top defensive teams in the series, winning 33-21 and preserving a perfect record in pool play matches throughout the season.

In the Cup Semifinals, which Brooklyn competed in at every tournament this season, Brooklyn faced NJ Blaze (NJ). In a tightly contested match, Brooklyn relied heavily upon its fluid offensive attack and its strong defense to prevail 14-12 against the host team and secure a spot in the Cup Finals for the fourth time in the season Series. The Semifinal victory also secured the Empire 7s Series Championship for Brooklyn, the first in the team’s history.

In the Cup Final, Brooklyn faced off against an opponent they had yet to face in 2015, Buffalo Rugby Club. From the outset of the game, Brooklyn had difficulty putting together the offensive phase play that had made them a force throughout the season. In what can be deemed Brooklyn’s only sub-par performance of the year, Buffalo prevailed 38-0.

The Brooklyn men finished the season with an impressive overall record of 21-4 in all matches, including a first place finish at Monmouth Sevens, three second place finishes, and a third place finish on the season.

The Brooklyn women also closed out a very successful 2015 campaign on Saturday at Blazing 7s. They kicked off the tournament with a one-sided 35-0 victory over Union Rugby Club (NJ). In their second and final pool play match of the day, they prevailed 19-12 over Morris ‘B’. In the Cup Semifinals, Brooklyn faced off against the NJ Blaze in a match that ultimately could have gone either way, but Brooklyn escaped with a 14-12 win. Then in the Cup Final, Brooklyn faced host club Morris Rugby. In what can be considered perhaps Brooklyn’s most hard-fought and heartbreaking game of the year, Morris prevailed on their home field 26-19 in extra time. The second place finish on the day helped Brooklyn secure fourth place overall in the final Series standings.
