It was a “Marty Party” at Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island on Oct. 24, as a packed house of Brooklyn’s movers and shakers came out to support Sen. Marty Golden as he seeks his eighth term in office.

Elected officials in attendance included Brooklyn Conservative Party leader and Golden’s Chief of Staff Jerry Kassar, Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce (BCC) Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff Andrew Hoan and BCC Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Rick Russo.

Bill Guarinello, president of Heart-Share Human Services of New York and chairman of Comm-unity Board 11 in Bensonhurst, offered the opening remarks. He thanked Golden for always fighting for his constituents, and introduced event chairs including attorneys Matthew Daus and Pat Russo, May Ellen and Gerald Ritter Foundation President Vincent Rohan and business leaders Robert Sabbagh and John Abi Habib.

Golden began his remarks by recognizing attendees Manni and Dayna Scarso, whose son Pietro suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rare form of muscular dystrophy that, according to Golden, affects nearly 4,000 young men every year in this country. He said that due to the parents’ efforts to help raise awareness, Washington has approved the first-ever drug to help combat this illness.

Golden said that he is excited to continue working on important issues such as economic development, job creation, health care, education and public safety.

He explained that economic development is critical to the success of the community. He mentioned the growth of the film industry in our area as an example of major economic development, adding that “New York is where the (film) industry wants to be.”

As a result, Golden pointed out the impact of all the jobs being created within the community.

He further cited the growth of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the Brooklyn Army Terminal and Industry City as “centers of business and financial opportunities like we have never ever seen before.”

He emphasized the need to support small businesses in the community and acknowledged the trade unions and all the skilled laborers, whom he called the “backbone of our great city.” He also praised the outstanding health force working in his district with “some of the greatest doctors and the best hospitals in our city.” The senator cited NYU Langone and Maimonides Medical Center as prime examples.

Golden said that educating children has always been the No. 1 issue on his agenda, and that he wanted to make sure that children received the proper training in schools so that they could achieve their dreams.

He added, “Every child deserves a quality education, whether it’s in public, private or charter schools … I want to make sure that our education system is balanced. If we take the best practices from our charter schools, parochial schools, private schools and our public schools, we will have the best education system in the nation.”

Regarding public safety, Golden pledged to help fight crime and take the streets back by thwarting any attempts to weaken the justice system.

He concluded his remarks by stating that we must remain vigilant in our fight against terrorism, and said how proud he was to serve as a member of the New York State Senate Task Force on Counterterrorism and Public Protection.

The evening concluded with Malliotakis presenting Golden with a framed illustration of Golden running for the Senate.
