ON THIS DAY IN 1913, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Realty Failure Due to Cost of Living.”

The article focused on the New York Real Estate Security Company, which declared bankruptcy due to a decrease in the number of New Yorkers buying homes.

“’The truth of is it that people who moved out of apartments last spring have either remained in the country or else they have taken quarters in hotels, where they can live cheaper by eating outside than they could by keeping house in their accustomed style,’ Hugh McAtamney, a friendly petitioner against the company said. ‘I am living in a hotel myself, so I know,’” the Eagle reported.

WILLIAM BLAKE WAS BORN on this day in 1757.  The Romantic visionary poet and artist is best known for his poem “The Tyger” and for his series of engravings for Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy.” He died in poverty in London in 1827.

TODAY IS THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF TRUMAN CAPOTE’S Black and White Ball. Author Truman Capote, buoyed financially by the tremendous success of his book “In Cold Blood,” held a masquerade ball at the Plaza Hotel for 500 friends honoring friend and Washington Post head Katherine Graham. Celebrities from all over the world flocked to the ball to show off custom-made black or white gowns and masks, many created by the hottest designers of the day.

CHARLES H. ALSTON WAS BORN on this day in 1907. The African American painter and sculptor experimented with styles ranging from realism to abstraction throughout his career. His realistic WPA murals at Harlem Hospital depict a narrative in the style of Diego Rivera. A number of his paintings also show the cultural influence of Italy and Egypt. “Walking” (1958), which depicts a silent crowd, almost prophesied the turmoil and social agitation of the civil rights movement. He died in New York in 1977.

CLAUDE LÉVI-STRAUSS WAS BORN on this day in 1908. The French anthropologist and philosopher is best known for advocating the intellectual movement “structuralism.” He authored many books, including his acclaimed memoir “Tristes Tropiques,” which recounted his experience among Brazilian tribes and challenged old ways of thinking about so-called primitive cultures. He died in Paris in 2009 at the age of 100.

THE BROOKLYN HISTORICAL SOCIETY WILL HOST “Book Talk: Steven Hahn and Eric Foner on ‘A Nation Without Borders’” tonight at 7 p.m. Pulitzer Prize-winning historians Hahn and Foner will discuss Hahn’s latest book, “A Nation Without Borders: The United States and Its World in an Age of Civil Wars, 1830-1910,” which takes a provocative new look at the eight decades surrounding the Civil War.
