ON THIS DAY IN 1953, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Crowds Gasp as Youth is Saved From River.”

The article focused on teenager Jerry Morro, who was seen walking on a crossbar of the Manhattan Bridge.

“As the police approached, Morro retreated to a side cable, where he got fouled up in barbed wire. One of the officers pounced on him while the other put a restraining belt on him. Thus trussed up he was lowered to the roadway,” the Eagle reported.

In 1950 the relatively obscure senator from Wisconsin announced during a speech that he had a list of Communists in the State Department. Over the next two years he made increasingly sensational charges, and in 1953 McCarthyism reached its height as he held Senate hearings in which he bullied defendants. The Senate voted to censure him after his tyranny was exposed in televised hearings. He died in 1957.
