Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 84th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1897, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Navy Yard Favoritism.”

The article focused on an inspection of the Brooklyn Navy Yard due to charges of political favoritism within the Yard’s departments.

“Secretary Long has, according to Washington dispatches, decided to fully enforce the naval regulations governing the employment of Navy Yard workmen, and will insist that the officers in charge of the various yard departments treat the men alike,” the Eagle reported. “Merit will be the only standard by which the men will be judged.”
