NightShul, the growing learning community at the East Midwood Jewish Center, is debuting its first cooking class as part of its spring lineup to close out the 2015-2016 season.

The headline class, Kosher Korean Cooking, blends two world cuisines. Participants will learn from Jinah Park Kamil how to make Kimchi, Banchan, Bibimbap and more Korean treats in this class that debuts May 12.

Each of the Nightshul classes, including Kosher Korean Cooking, run in three-week progressions, each on Thursdays, May 12, 19 and 26, in which each class builds on the techniques learned during the previous week. The first week of Kosher Korean Cooking will be Kimchi-making; the second will be Banchan & Bap (Rice)-making; and the third, Bibimbap and Doenjang-Guk (Soybean Paste Soup).

Nightshul also offers classes in Tanakh and meditation for those who prefer discussion, lecture and more contemplative styles of learning.

Cantor Sam Levine will teach a class on “Rashi and His Methodology.”

This 11th century French rabbi set the standard for biblical exegesis (commentary). To this day, there is no traditional Jewish bible that is printed without Rashi’s commentary.

Rabbi Sue Oren will teach Selected Shorts from the Tanakh. Each week, participants will read and discuss one of these gems from the Tanakh:  Song of Songs, Ruth and Jonah, employing multiple perspectives:  its thematic and literary merits, classical and contemporary midrash, its liturgical placement in the Jewish calendar year, and our own personal responses.

Rabbi Sara Zacharia will teach “Lev Tahor: Mindfulness Practice in Jewish Culture. This is an introduction to Jewish Meditation through niggun (wordless song), kavanah (intention), guided meditation, silence and study. This course is open to the novice and seasoned practitioner.

East Midwood Jewish Center is located at 1625 Ocean Ave.
