Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 125th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1912, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Brooklyn Woman Wins.”

The article focused on the first round of a whist tournament held in Philadelphia, which a Brooklyn woman won.

“The Brooklyn Trophy was won by Mrs. John Ditmars of the Brooklyn Woman’s Whist Club and [her partner] Mrs. G. H. Mackey,” the Eagle reported. “… Final play for the New Amsterdam Cup will be held today, the concluding day of the congress.”

AUDREY HEPBURN was born on this day in 1929. She made 29 films during her career and received five Oscar nominations and one win. During the latter years of her life, Hepburn served as spokesperson for the United Nations Children’s Fund. She died in Switzerland in January of 1993.
