Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 126th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1925, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Pastor Henderson’s Lost Diary Washed Across the Irish Sea.”

The article focused on the diary of the pastor of Plymouth Church being found on the shores of Scotland two years after he lost it while vacationing in Ireland.

“From his home in Patchogue, L.I., Mr. Henderson said today that he had mislaid his pocketbook, containing the diary, letters and notes, in a railroad coach in Ireland while traveling there early in 1923,” the Eagle reported. “He had written several times to the railroad officials about it, but they were unable to find the lost articles.”

KARL MARX WAS born on this day in 1818. Marx was a German socialist, founder and father of modern communism, author of “Das Kapital” and (with Frederick Engels) the “Communist Manifesto.” He died in London in March of 1883.

NELLIE BLY WAS born on this day in 1867. “Nellie Bly” was the pseudonym used by pioneering American journalist Elizabeth Cochane Seaman, who was a social reformer and human rights advocate. As a journalist, she is best known for her expose of conditions in what were then popularly called “insane asylums,” where she posed as an inmate. As an adventurer, she is best known for her 1889-90 around-the-world tour in 72 days. She died in New York City in January of 1922.
