ON THIS DAY IN 1946, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “FBI Joins Drive on Black Market in Meat in City.”

The article focused on a probe into the city’s black market meat industry.

“The FBI reinforcements were added to OPA agents, city police and inspectors of the sheriff’s office and city Health and Markets Departments, who have been patrolling the local meat front since April 24,” the Eagle reported. “… forces already on the job will continue their anti-black market activities as vigorously as ever.”

SIGMUND FREUD was born on this day in 1856. The Austrian physician was the founder of psychoanalysis. He died in London in 1939.

ORSON WELLES WAS born on this day in 1915. The actor, director and radio, stage and film writer created experimental and larger-than-life works, including “The War of the Worlds,” his panic-inducing 1938 radio broadcast about alien invasion, and his films “Citizen Kane” and “The Lady from Shanghai.” While his films were financially unsuccessful, since their release Welles has been regarded as one of cinema’s greatest directors. He died in Los Angeles in 1985.
