Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 153rd day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1923, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “City Gives Small Increase in Pay to Hospital Nurses.”

The article focused on the Board of Estimate granting a small pay raise to the city’s nurses after it was called out for its bad treatment of hospital employees.

“Commissioner of Welfare Bird S. Coler declared that the so-called ‘mandatory’ departments of the city’s government were squeezing less fortune departments such as his own to the point where the latter’s existence was at stake,” the Eagle reported.
