Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 169th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1892, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Kept in Terror: Bay Ridge Residents Now Go Out Armed.”

The article focused on numerous crimes that had taken place in Bay Ridge in the preceding months and a local citizens association that aimed to catch the offenders.

“These outrages have been going on for many months, and as far back as March the Citizens’ Association of Fort Hamilton and Bay Ridge offered a reward of $100 for the arrest and conviction of the authors of the mischief,” the Eagle reported. “Many citizens are ready and willing to go deep in their pockets to aid in the capture of the miscreants who are terrorizing the place.”
