A June 4 walking tour will shine a spotlight on East New York’s historic buildings

Do you know the way to the old Borden Dairy, whose façade is graced with tile murals of cows in mountain-top meadows?

How about the stunning Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, with its distinctive green domes?

Unless you’re an East New York resident or a die-hard preservationist, the answer is probably no.

The Historic Districts Council (HDC) can put you in the know, though.

The organization is hosting a walking tour of East New York’s landmark-worthy buildings on Saturday, June 4 at 10 a.m.

Go to http://6tocelebrate.org/category/news-events/ to register for the tour and obtain info about the itinerary. The tour costs $20, or $10 for seniors and HDC “friends,” meaning donors to the nonprofit preservationist group.

Farrah Lafontant, a longtime neighborhood resident and a member of Preserving East New York, will lead the tour.

This advocacy group plans to seek city landmark status for numerous historic buildings in East New York and Cypress Hills.

The buildings’ continued existence is potentially threatened by the rezoning of part of East New York for large-scale affordable housing development, which the City Council approved this past April.

According to Preserving East New York, about 30 properties in the rezoning area are potential candidates for proposal as landmarks.

This year, HDC honored East New York with its “Six to Celebrate” award.

The award is given to New York City neighborhoods that merit preservationist attention.
