Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 208th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1939, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “50 Sleuths Put on Slayers’ Trail.”

The article focused on 50 detectives who were assigned the job of tracking down four gunmen who shot and killed a man in front of his Bronx home.

“…after more than 24 hours of activity police officials admitted today they were puzzled about the motive in the case and that they were without suspects,” the Eagle reported. “…they ridiculed a story that the assassins had mistaken [the man] for Ike Luckman, a fugitive wanted in connection with the famous Drukman murder case in Brooklyn.”

However, it was not until after the war — July 26, 1948 — that President Harry Truman signed an order officially integrating the armed forces.
