Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 238th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1929, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Nine Makes of Lipstick Contain Benzol, Highly Dangerous, Wynne Finds.”

The article focused on a survey that revealed that many beauty products were being made with poisonous ingredients and were being used in most beauty parlors across the city.

“Pointing out that the modern woman uses color on her lips at least five times a day, Commissioner Wynne said, ‘dangerous results are inevitable,’” the Eagle reported. “‘Vanity in this day and age,’ said Dr. Wynne, ‘is openly exploited, and is impossible to combat until we obtain the cooperation of the women themselves.’”
