Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 257th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1922, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Didn’t Like School So Set Fire to it, Says Girl of 13.”

The article focused on a public school student who set several fires in her school building in hopes of being transferred to a different school.

“Antoinette, according to the principal and her own admission, went about the business of burning down her school deliberately,” the Eagle reported. “She purchased 5 cents’ worth of kerosene in a grocery store. With this she soaked a number of small pieces of paper and scattered them through the hallway and several rooms of the school building. Then she got a match, lighted it and set the flame to the saturated papers.”

ROALD DAHL WAS born on this day in 1916. The author of humorously dark fantasy novels, Dahl is often referred to as one of the most significant novelists for children of the 20th century. He is best remembered for “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “The BFG” and “Matilda,” among others. He died in 1990.
