MTA sponsors underground art contest
5 Brooklyn Subway Stations Chosen to Showcase Local Artwork
How nice would it be to wander through a Brooklyn subway station and have the opportunity to admire brand new artwork created by an artist? That is precisely what the MTA has planned.
The MTA Arts & Design division is looking for samples of artists’ previous work to review in consideration for the new Percent for Art project, which will be designed with durable materials such as glass or mosaic. The selected artists’ works will be created specifically for the train stations.
A panel comprised of arts and design professionals will select finalists to develop original art proposals. Finalists will be given site specifications and a detailed overview of the project, for which they will receive an honorarium of $1,000. Following the selection panel’s review of the proposals, one artist per station will be selected to receive the commission.
