Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 273rd day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1922, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Son, Missing, Is Heir to Forgiving Father’s $10,000.”

The article focused on an unclaimed fortune due to the heir being missing at the time of his father’s death.

“He is made the sole heir under his father’s will and will need only to establish his identity in order to obtain possession of the estate,” the Eagle reported. “According to Maj. Edward Underwood of the Salvation Army the younger Fields was in financial straits when he was last heard from and the fortune therefore probably will prove particularly opportune.”

GENE AUTRY WAS born on this day in 1907. Autry was arguably America’s favorite singing cowboy in a career that spanned almost seven decades. He began performing on local radio in his late teens before signing with Columbia Records in 1931 and appearing for a time on the “National Barn Dance” radio show. His film career began soon afterward, and he starred in nearly 100 movies, almost all of which were B-westerns in which his singing featured prominently. After retiring from acting, Autry became a baseball executive. He died in 1998.
