Councilmember Rafael Espinal on Friday highlighted the $17.45 million allocated to 27 neighborhood public schools in East New York, Cypress Hills and Brownsville. The money will support technology upgrades, such as the purchasing of laptops, smartboards, printers and mobile computer carts.

The funding will also go to renovating existing school infrastructure, such as libraries, gyms, science labs, school yards, dance studios, auditoriums and other capital improvement projects. The funds come as part of a comprehensive rezoning plan the councilmember struck in the Spring of 2016, which is geared toward encouraging long-term growth and sustainability in Northern Brooklyn.

Espinal said that these 27 schools in his district “are some of the most systematically underserved schools in New York City, and it is time we show our commitment to our students by investing in the tools that will guarantee their success.”

“When communities come together to support our schools, it’s our students — and our city —who win,” said Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña.

“This is money well spent and marks a true investment in the long-term success of the community,” said Sen. Senator Martin Malavé Dilan.  “Using education to spur growth at every facet of communal life, from schools, to homes and jobs, is precisely what we need to be doing to have a lasting impact.”
