State Sen. Marty Golden isn’t trying to compete with H&R Block, but the Southwest Brooklyn lawmaker is offering tax preparation services in his district office in Bay Ridge.

Golden announced that he will host the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, a service provided by the Internal Revenue Service in which experts assist residents in filling out their tax returns.

The service is free for residents making less than $30,000 annually.

Golden has hosted the VITA Program in his district office for two decades, dating back to his days as a city councilmember. Golden served in the council from 1997 to 2002. He was elected to the state Senate in 2002.

“I once again look forward to helping hundreds of my constituents complete their tax returns at no charge.  This will be the 20th year that my office has hosted the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, an invaluable service to those who qualify, saving constituents hundreds of dollars they would otherwise spend in tax preparation services. I urge all those who qualify to call now to make an appointment,” Golden said in a statement.

Appointments are required and will be available at the district office at 7408 Fifth Ave. on Sundays and Mondays from Feb. 19 through April 10. Sunday appointments will be scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Monday appointments will take place in the evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., according to Golden’s office.

The free program does not permit tax returns to be prepared for individuals with investment income or losses, income from rental property and/or self-employed taxpayers with business expenses above $5,000, or losses.

For more information, call Sen. Golden’s office at 718-238-6044.
