Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn is giving students the chance to travel around the globe without ever leaving Brooklyn.

The Bay Ridge private school is celebrating its 155th Anniversary this year and to mark the occasion, school administrators said they are organizing activities around the theme “Around the World in 155 Years.”

The 2017-2018 school year, which got under way last month, promises to introduce a number of new and exciting programs for students, according to academy officials.

“The theme for this academic year is ‘Around the World in 155 Years,’ which is fitting because it allows Adelphians young and old to reflect upon the academy’s incredibly rich history while anticipating the next exciting chapter for our school, our students and their families,” Head of School Iphigenia Romanos said in a statement.

Founded in 1863 and located at 8515 Ridge Blvd. in Bay Ridge, Adelphi Academy educates students from the tender age of two all the way to senior year in high school.

New to Adelphi Academy this year is the establishment of a House System in which students will become members of one of four houses.

The House System allows for each house to accumulate points throughout the term for individual and class-wide academic and extra-curricular achievements.  The house with the most points by the end of the year will have its name etched on a trophy that will be displayed in the main hall.

So far this term, students have taken part in team-building exercises in which they worked together to create official crests and mottos for their respective houses, Morrill, Lockwood, Ellinwood and Levermore. Each house is named for an early leader of Adelphi Academy.

“The House System allows students to be part of something positive and fun that is ongoing and provides immediate as well as long-term recognition for conducting themselves in a manner befitting of Adelphi’s earliest leaders,” Director of Academy Operations Albert C. Corhan stated.

“It’s a historic year at Adelphi, and these students are literally making history as the founders of their respective houses,” Corhan added.

Another new feature this year is Activities Day, a day in in which students will be able to take elective courses in robotics, inventive writing, photography, dance, sculpture, publications, foreign film studies and yoga.

“To allow students to concentrate for a full day on the unique programs and classes that help to form their academic and social identities is an extraordinary opportunity and one of many found only at Adelphi,” Romanos said.

Still ahead for Adelphi Academy this semester is the Annual Fall Auction of Fine Art, Cigar Night & Cocktail Reception, which is set for Oct. 13.

The evening features an auction in which guests bid on authentic, one-of-a-kind collectibles, fine art and memorabilia from the worlds of movies, music, theater and politics. Original artworks created by students will also be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to programs that benefiting the students.
