~KATY TUR, MSNBC STAR/BEST-SELLING AUTHOR, RECALLS HER BKLYN BEGINNINGS: Now a best-seller, the new book by MSNBC anchorKaty Tur could not be timelier. Already high profile, the news reporter appears weekdays at 2 p.m. on “MSNBC Live with Katy Tur.” But her book, titled “Unbelievable: My Front Row Seat to the Craziest Campaign in American History,” has become a page turner that many are reading in one sitting. Tur’s recollections of her start at News 12 Brooklyn are filled with classic newbie reporter stories: At 5-foot-2, she stood on a chair to interview then-Councilmember Bill de Blasio; hailing from sun-drenched L.A., she could not believe that an outdoor protest rally in East New York would actually take place in foul weather. Check out what else Tur had to say in our recentinterview with her. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~TURNSTILE JUMP POLICING TARGETS BLACKS AND THE POOR: It may not be a new theory, but a recent report found that subway turnstile jump policing disproportionately targets poor African-American New Yorkers. The report by the Community Service Society of New York published that the arrest rates correlate with predominantly black neighborhoods in Brooklyn, rather than crime rates. “This is basically a crime of poverty. I keep talking about ‘Les Misérables’ and how this is effectively stealing bread from New Yorkers,” said President and CEO of the Community Service Society of New York David Jones. Sixty-six percent of the 4,054 turnstile arrests last year in Brooklyn were black persons, the report found. Stations in the historically impoverished neighborhoods of Bed-StuyCrown HeightsBrownsville and East New York saw the most arrests. The NYPD refuted the report in a statement, saying police assign resources based on multiple factors, including ridership levels and crime. (via amNewYork)

~BROOKLYN OPERA SINGER TO COMPETE ON ‘JEOPARDY!’WEDNESDAY: Another brainiac from Brooklyn steps up to the plate on “Jeopardy!” WednesdayChelsea Feltman, an opera singer and actor, will be pitting her encyclopedic knowledge of minutia against opponents from across the country on the popular quiz show. Win or lose the audience — and longtime host, Alex Trebek — will be sure to enjoy watching her compete. Feltman, a soprano who has performed internationally, has been praised by the New York Classical Review for her beautiful voice and “magnetic” performance. “I’ve loved ‘Jeopardy!’ since watching it with my grandma as a kid every night,” Feltman told us. Feldman didn’t have to cram to prepare. “I’m not a hard core trivia person, but I do read a lot and do The New York Timescrossword puzzle pretty much every day. The crossword is an amazing way to gain knowledge and prep for a show like ‘Jeopardy!’ both because it covers such a breadth of topics and because it asks you to think abstractly,” she said.(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~LPC OKAYS RENOVATION OF SHUTTERED PAUL ROBESON THEATRE: The Landmarks Preservation Commission gave a thumbs-up to renovation plans for the building that housed the now-closed Paul Robeson Theatre — whose next tenant might be a community theatre. On Tuesday, the agency approved renovation plans for the former playhouse at 40 Greene Ave. in Fort Greene. The building is actually a Rundbogenstil, or Round Arch-style, church that was constructed around 1864. The planned renovation is all about “getting the building ready for its next life,” said Jordan Rogove, a partner at architecture firm DXA studio. The building is going to remain a community facility. The owner is speaking to a number of prospective tenants, the architect said — including community theatres. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~DEVELOPERS LOOK FOR STYLE, NOT CREDIT IN BROOKLYN: Brooklyn neighborhoods like WilliamsburgBushwick and Greenpoint attract high foot-traffic with their style, and now developers are seeking that Brooklyn swagger to continue to build. “People want an authentic Brooklyn experience,” said Lee & Associates Brooklyn Retail Director Jaime Schultz. So businesses that want a share of the experience are coming up with unique ideas to get to the in-crowd. For example, Adidas opened its “Brooklyn Creator Farm” in a former industrial building in Greenpoint instead of just selling sneakers. This trend has caused landlords to push for tenants that have obscure style rather than those with impeccable credit ratings. (via Bisnow)

EAGLE SPORTS: Buoyed by the deft moves of GM Sean Marks this past summer, which included the acquisitions of budding star D’Angelo Russell, sharp-shooter Allen Crabbe and veteran leader DeMarre Carroll, three likely starters in the Nets’ Opening Night lineup, Brooklyn is eager to kick off a new era Wednesday night in Indiana, where they will begin the 2017-18 campaignagainst the Pacers. An era marked by the team’s progress on the court, rather than its ongoing quest to climb out of the cavernous hole created by Billy King’s ill-fated decision to swap the organization’s future for a pair of over-the-hill future Hall of Famers. “The objective for us is to be in the playoffs. When that comes, we’ll see,” Marks said in April. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
